Slobodan Butros hired the runners on behalf of Proteus AG. Space pirates had been hitting Proteus' shipments, and Slobodan wanted the runners to go on a ship, pretend to be workers, and get captured. They did; the priates brought them back to their moon base, where regular crew were used to mine helium-3, and scientists were put to work in very un-pirate-like labs. The runners managed to escape -- though not without briefly being exposed to hard vacuum -- and report back.
